The latest results

Thanks to the follow-up of the EGEA population, which enabled repeated assessment of cleaning product exposure and respiratory health, a recent study suggests that long-term weekly use of spray cleaning products may have a negative effect on the evolution of asthma symptoms.

A recent study based on two French cohorts (CONSTANCES and EGEA) shows that allergic rhinitis and non-allergic rhinitis, alone or associated with asthma and conjunctivitis, are quite distinct phenotypes. Results indicate that participants with asthma and conjunctivitis had more severe rhinitis.

Few studies have examined the association between exposure to indoor moulds and rhinitis in adults. In the EGEA study, we showed that exposure to indoor moulds was associated with current and allergic rhinitis, suggesting the need for preventive measures against indoor mould growth.

The EGEA cohort

in a few words

The epidemiological EGEA cohort (Epidemiological study on the Genetics and Environment of Asthma, bronchial hyperresponsiveness and atopy) was initiated in 1991 to meet the following general objectives:

  1. to identify the genetic factors of asthma
  2. to identify the environmental factors of asthma
  3. to clarify the clinical heterogeneity of asthma.
